Happy Valentine's Day!
This morning, I read an uplifting post by Jen on A Little Opulent about being an encourager. As a creative, it can be so hard to look around you at all the successful people out there in the same field as you. You look at their work, their following, their success and wonder why it isn't happening to you.
Fun fact: They went through what you're going through as some point, too.
They might even be looking at other people in their field with even more success than them and wondering the same thing. What's important to remember is that the only person you should be competing with is yourself. Challenge yourself to be better than you were yesterday. Challenge yourself to push your boundaries, think outside the box, and produce better work than you did in your last project. While you're doing that, lift up those around you. Spread the love and encourage your fellow creatives. There's a lot of negativity out there in this world, but you can contribute to the positivity with just a few words here and there. If you like an artist's work, let them know! Whether that's a comment on their Instagram photo or blog post, a simple tweet, or even an email to let them know that you enjoy their work. You can easily make their day or week! I love doing this. If I like someone's work, I want to let them know that. If I keep it to myself, they'll never know that someone out there appreciates their work. Don't get sucked into comparisons and negativity. Nothing good will come from that. Change your mentality and share the love and you'll see that it will have a powerful impact on the way you work and your everyday life. Like Jen said in her post:
"One person's success doesn't detract from your own, and if you can be genuinely happy for the people around you then you will develop a much more positive approach to life."
Surround yourself with creativity of all sorts. Let those creatives know that a project they clearly put their heart and soul into resonates with you. If you vibe with it, tell them.
I challenge you to go out and do this with five people this week. Or even just today since it's a perfect day to share the love! I bet that after you do this, you're going to feel a lot better. You're putting some good into the world and that's a pretty amazing thing.
